Gabriella Sanchez is an awkward, eleven year-old girl simply trying to fit in. Bullied by her classmates, she’s forced into a solitary existence. She attempts to change her circumstances by befriending Molly Sinclair, the daughter of the wealthy couple her mother works for. Things seemed to be going well, until the day Molly decided she was embarrassed to be friends with Gabriella in public. Gabriella’s luck changes when she meets new student, Gilberto Padilla. He accepts her just as she is. The two become inseparable. Gabriella is so happy she even forgives Molly and revisits their friendship. With school out for the summer, Gabriella and Gilberto’s family plan a trip to Puerto Rico. A spoiled Molly convinces her parents to let her tag along. Gabriella is overjoyed to be experiencing it for the first time with her best friends. Friendship is tested when a battle begins between the two girls, over Gilberto. But, while in Puerto Rico Gabriella and Molly meet Juan, a friend of the Padilla family. Molly instantly falls for him while he has his eye set on Gabriella. This infuriates Molly, who inadvertently causes a near fatal accident for her friend. Molly’s unscrupulous behavior sets off a peculiar chain of events. Eleven year-old Gabriella then finds herself in the middle of an age old mystery after curious happenings begin to occur. After entrusting only her friends with the information, the four choose never to discuss it again, until Gabriella starts having cryptic dreams, years later. Now well into their teens the trio strengthens their friendship and two even find love with one another. Together, they enter high school and drama ensues. Gabriella finds herself torn between two boys. Tragedy strikes Molly with devastating consequences. Gilberto remains Gabriella’s constant through it all. In the midst of the chaos, the friends learn that they will be returning to Puerto Rico for a wedding. On the second trip to Puerto Rico, Gabriella, now fifteen years-old, is determined to uncover the clues in her dreams. She discovers that her dreams unlock mysteries of the ancient Taino tribe, in which she and her friends play an important role. Together they journey through time, to learn Gabriella’s fate, and a lesson of the inevitable law of Karma.

As I mentioned in other posts, Young Adult (YA) literature is not normally my first pick. I did enjoy the book and recommend it to those of you that read YA often. The story has many secondary topics which are integrated nicely, but in some cases were too strong for a prune like me.

The author presents great [detail] descriptions about Puerto Rico; everything from its typical meals to its flora and fauna. When you read them, you will want to go and visit, and if you live on the island you will learn to appreciate your surroundings and its history.

As you read the book, you will not believe this is May's first novel. The structure & language are well selected and the characters, plot and settings are nicely written. The sequence of events are developed properly and no questions is left unanswered.

The sense of familiarity, karma and reincarnation are present in the events and the characters interactions. The story is a mix of fantasy and reality with a trip back in time at the same time than a visit to the future. It is all at once, but in an organized manner. All these characteristics are knitted into a great story.

Wanting a Multi-Cultured Book to read ? Enchanted Island by May Torres takes the reader on a journey into the culture of Puerto Ricans as we meet Gabriella whom I guessed would be about 11-12yrs when we first meet her is living in America with her mum Rosa. All Gabby wishes to make her life complete was that she belonged - belonged with the popular girls in her school especially Molly, who seemed like she had the perfect life. Enter Gilberto, he is a new student at their school and he befriends on his first day Gabby, as the novel goes along we can see that Gilberto really likes Gabby but she seems oblivious to the fact that he likes her more than just a friend -something I can admit that some of us girls actually have trouble with realising when a guy likes her and that he's not just being friendly for the sake of it, there is more lol. Soon Molly starts to change her ways as she envies Gilberto and Gabby's relationship and soon their duo becomes a threesome. The novel then moves from America to Puerto Rico , where the threesome are on a holiday when a tragedy occurs which causes Molly to get sick , Gabriella nearly killed and the relationship between the threesome starts to involve betrayal and hurt.
Years later , when Gabriella is fifteen years old , she has been experiencing dreams about Puerto Rico and the trip she took when she was eleven, now she has decided to head back to Puerto Rico and open a Pandora's box to unlock the truth about what really happened .
Enchanted Island for all those that belive in What Goes around Comes Around holds the perfect example of Karma.
LOVED IT!! A book you can read over, and over!!
